Little Known Debt Cures

How much debt do you have? Are you tossing and turning at night, or simply staring blankly at the ceiling, unable to sleep for the worry of it?

Are you wracking your brain, trying to sort through the various debt cures commercials or well-intentioned friends have told you about?

Debt is a disease. Its symptoms include insomnia, stress, ulcers, marital arguments, car payments that outweigh monthly grocery budgets, and usually denial.

We’ve been taught that debt is a necessary disease that will plague us all until our deaths. In our culture, in order to have a comfortable lifestyle, we have to have car debt, credit card debt, and student loans. Right?

Wrong.

Debt is a disease for which there is a cure. Debt cures vary, but the ones that work have some very important things in common.

In order to lose your debt and keep it off, you have to approach it the same way you would a successful weight loss plan (fad debt diets don’t work in the long run any better than fad diets).

So what is it that these reliable debt cures share in common? The biggie is that they help you realize how to change your behavior. Debt is a behavior problem, not a math problem.

The first step to curing your debt is to adopt the attitude that Debt Is Wrong. You have to truly believe this.

You need to talk to people who are living comfortable - if not truly luxurious - lives without any debt beyond their mortgage. You have got to believe this, or you will be stuck in the cycle for life.

Next, you have to do your best to get your spouse (if applicable) on the same page as you. If it’s a team effort, it will be so, so much easier.

Once you really realize the need for change, you have to stop spending on unnecessary items. It’s not that you can never buy luxuries again, but you need to cut the line for a little while, until the debt it gone.

Imagine how much money you’ll have to spend on fun stuff when you’re not making minimum payments every month!!!

Lastly, network. The key to debt cures may likely be keeping in touch with others going through the same thing. Share ideas. Share your triumphs. Go it together. You can do it!
